The roots act as a blood purifier that helps both the kidneys and the liver to remove toxins and poisons from the blood. Helps increase the flow of bile, which is beneficial for liver disorders, gallstones, jaundice, and the bile duct.

                                            The 10 most essential herbs

One of the most honorable herbs I believe is Dandelion.  I picked this month to talk them since they will be popping out all over.  Instead of  buying some expensive roundup for these "pestie weeds," you may want to harvest them instead.
Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale): The name dandelion is derived from "lion's tooth", referring to the shape of this plant's leaves.  The bright yellow flower that heralds the beginning of spring, grows wild in North America and in most of the world and is cultivated as an herb in China, France and Germany.  Young leaves are picked in the spring for tonic salads.  In the early summer before the plant blooms, leaves are harvested and manufactured for medicinal teas and tinctures. Roots are also used.  They are a wonderful blood purifier that helps both the kidneys and the liver to remove toxins and poisons from the blood.
Dandelion has been found to contain all the nutritive salts which purify and balance the blood and destroys toxins.  It is high in iron, which nourishes and strengthens the blood; it also contains high amounts of vitamins A, B, C and E, which strengthen the immune system and mucous membranes.  It is rich in potassium, calcium and sodium.  It contains magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, copper, selenium, zinc, and B-complex vitamins.  The roots contain inulin which yields sub-variants of fructose and glucose.
Modern research has proven the validity of Dandelion.  The rhizomes and roots increase the flow of bile, which is beneficial for liver disorders, gallstones, jaundice, and the bile duct. It increases bile production and bile flow to the liver. It can help with arthritis as it stimulates the uric acid elimination from the body.  It is also used to heal connective tissues and stop degeneration.  It is thought to have cancer and infection fighting potential. It is known to be beneficial to the kidneys, bladder and urinary tract.  This helps to relieve fluid retention in premenstrual syndrome and is better to use rather then diuretics, which cause a loss of potassium.  Dandelion leaves are rich in potassium.  By increasing potassium levels, it aids in alleviating muscle spasms and nighttime leg cramps.   It promotes the flow of urine and also helps prevent kidney stones in addition to aiding and expelling them.  The entire plant can be used; even the flowers may be eaten or made into tea.  The roots are often roasted and used alone or combined with roasted chicory root for a caffeine free coffee-tasting drink.   Even the milky juice in the stem may be applied to warts, which eventually dry up and fall off.  If used daily for two or three days.  It is also useful for corns, acne, age spots and blisters.
Leaves are best used before it flowers when they are young.  They may have a more bitter taste after flowering. They may be dried or used fresh for tea.  When collecting roots, take only large, fleshy root from two year old plants. They may be dried or roasted.
Considerations for use: Dandelion may cause increased stomach acidity and ulcer pain.  If you have gallstones or biliary tract obstructions, you should avoid this herb.  If you are taking diuretic drugs, insulin, or medications that reduce blood-sugar levels, you should use dandelion only under a physician’s supervision.   It also should be avoided during antibiotic treatment, especially treatment with ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin (Floxin), Lomefloxacin (Maxaquin) norfloxacin (Noroxin) and enoxacin (Penetrex), since it may keep concentrations of these antibiotics from peaking in the bloodstream, diminishing their ability to fight infection.

Avoid if you have gallstones, since the flow of bile could increase pressure against the stones.  May cause increased stomach acidity and ulcer pain. Avoid during antibiotic treatments.
