This is the tall stock of leaves with the yellow flower that looks like a corncob and can stand about 6 feet tall.  We’re talking about Mullein (Verbascum thapsus). Like spinach, to which it is related, mullein grows oval leaves close to the ground and puts up a flower spike in the summer.  Unlike spinach, mullein’s flower spike can extend as high as 6 feet.  Mullein has a slightly hairy, gray-green, sulfurous-smelling leaves, along with bright yellow flowers. The leaves and flowers are used in herbal medicine.

Mullein has been popular as a remedy for respiratory problems such as cough, bronchitis, and asthma.  It is used to soothe irritation and clear congestion, control diarrhea, and increase urine production.  Native Americans used it to treat lung problems and some tribes smoked the leaves to treat asthma.  Other uses are for pain, as a sleep aid, laxative and the crushed flowers are used to remove warts.  Traditional uses of Mullein have been to relieve pain and to induce sleep.  It has a calming effect on inflamed tissues and irritated nerves.  Helps control spasms and cramps. It can help loosen mucus from the respiratory and lymphatic systems.  Making it into a tea has been used for dropsy, sinusitis and swollen joints.  Externally, it is used to treat wounds, calm the pain and inflammation of hemorrhoids and soften the shin. A hot tea used as a compress helps when applied to mumps, tumors, stings, toothaches, eye problems, sore throat and tonsillitis. In Germany, Mullein flowers are steeped in olive oil and then strained to make a remedy for ear infections.

Mullein is high in calcium and potassium, which are both necessary for the nervous system, healthy bones and healing the lungs.  It is high in iron for rich blood and in sulphur for its healing properties.  It also contains vitamins A, D, and B-complex.

Considerations for use – If you have a history of cancer, you should consult your doctor before taking this herb internally, since the tannins found in mullein is thought to have both cancer-promoting and cancer-fighting actions.  You should not take mullein if you are pregnant or nursing. Mullein seeds should be avoided altogether, as they are toxic and may cause poisoning.
