The 10 most Honorable Herbs
I am going to tell you about a wonderful herb called “Scullcap”. It is called a food for the nerves; supporting and strengthening them as it gives immediate relief of all chronic and acute diseases stemming from nervous affection and debility.
Scullcap was used by the Cherokee tribe as an emmenagogue and was used historically as an anticonvulsant and to treat hydrophobia. Chinese physicians have used it as a tranquilizer/sedative and to treat convulsions. In 1772, it was considered a cure for rabies. It was later recommended for insomnia, nervousness, malaria and convulsions. Research done in Europe and Russia has proven the benefits of Scullcap as a tranquilizer. Studies in Japan using animals has shown that it could increase levels of good cholesterol and may suggest it as a heart disease and stroke preventative.
Scullcap is an herb that is a specific for the spinal cord. At the base of the skull, the medulla oblongata houses the motor nerve. Scullcap is wonderful for any disorder of the spinal cord or the motor nerve. When this nerve is congested, messages cannot reach the rest of the body. Scullcap can correct this. When a headache occurs from coughing, a cup of scullcap tea will aid and relax the victim. Because the Herpes virus is seated in the spinal cord, this herb is being used as a cold sore relief remedy.
Scullcap is a tonic, nervine, and slightly astringent. It may treat a variety of conditions including pain, anxiety, high blood pressure and epilepsy. It is well known for its ability to calm the nerves and help with all nervous system conditions. It is an excellent antispasmodic agent for restlessness, tremors, spasms, twitching of the muscles and hypersensitivity. It is as stimulating to the nerves as quinine, but without the harmful side and after-effects.
It works very well alone as an herbal extract or as a tea or in capsule form. It also works well with other herbs to help combat a wide variety of conditions. I use it in many of my formulas. My mother loves the herbal extract for her neck and shoulder pain. She’s giving to my dad in juice for back pain usually from golfing and noticed that when he’d fall asleep on the couch he wasn’t snoring anymore. Now he gets it all the time.
Scullcap contains calcium, which acts as a natural pain killer, calms the nervous system, increases resistance to infections and decreases acidity levels to promote a balance in the body. Potassium is necessary for the muscles to contact, to reduce hypoglycemic blackouts, helps prevent germs from accumulating in the tissues, aids in insomnia, and help motor nerve function. It also has magnesium, which may calm the nerves, improve resistance to infections and strengthen the nervous system. Scullcap contains vitamin C, which acts as a detoxifying agent and combats viruses and germs in the body. It also contains vitamin E, which enables the body to utilize oxygen more efficiently, improves circulation, reduces uric acid and prevents sterility. It also contains iron and zinc.
Considerations for use: There are none listed. There are no side effects.
Well I hope you enjoyed this series of what I feel are the 10 most honorable herbs. There are many honorable herbs out there and there are many herbs that are overlooked because people are not aware of their healing properties. We need to educate ourselves as far as identification of herbs in the field, not only their therapeutic uses. A bottle of herb capsules from the health food store is no substitute for your knowledge of how to recognize, collect, prepare and store herbs. This is why I describe them, as you would see them in the field and how to use and prepare them. It is a much greater experience to prepare your own herbal formulas from plants you have grown or gathered, than to use drugs, which mask symptoms.
