OREGON GRAPE ROOT –
Therapeutic Action
One of the best blood purifiers and liver stimulants. It is a mild stimulant on the thyroid functions. It creates appetite, promotes digestion, improves absorption, and increases strength and vitality. It helps heal the bowel as a gentle tonic-cathartic, and the genito-urinary tract, and is very healing to the lymphatic system and skin tissues. Slight stimulant, tonic laxative, diuretic, antiscorbtic, antisyphilitic, antiscrofulous, nerve tonic.
Medicinal uses:
Chronic skin diseases, psoriasis, chronic eczema, herpes, hepatitis, staph infection, scrofulous, chronic constipation, weak digestion, flatulence, jaundice, kidney and liver troubles, rheumatism, chronic uterine diseases.
Skin diseases: Drink the decoction internally, and use externally as a fomentation or wash.
Chronic Constipation: Combine Oregon Grape Root (2 parts) with cascara sagrada (1/2 part). Take in doses of 2 fluid ounces, but if this relaxes the bowels too much, reduce the dose, Take regularly.
Contains minerals such as manganese, silicon, sodium, copper and zinc.
Caution:
A mild sedative - use with caution when taking an antianxiety drug, such as alprazolam (Xanax) or lorazepam (Ativan). May interfere with the absorption of tetracyline antibiotics. May lower blood sugar, use with caution if you have diabetes. May also cause stomach irritation, so should be avoided in treating diarrhea, and by people with chronic heartburn. May cause uteine contractions so avoid during pregnancy. Not recommended for long-term use (three weeks or more at a time).
