Cold and Flu Season
By Rosha Roush
The common cold. I don't think it's really all that common. I mean we all get them and the symptoms are always the same. Which include head congestion, difficult breathing, coughing, headaches, pains, sore throat, sneezing, watery eyes, fever, stomach aches. and so on. The thing that isn't common is the wide variety of rhinoviruses. Usually once a person has been infected with a particular strain of rhinovirus, he or she usually develops an immune defense to it.
Children however, with their developing, uncoordinated immune systems, can have as many as seven colds a year. The problem is there are enough strains that the average adult is exposed to one or two new ones every year. Therefore the "Common Cold" is hard to cure because the virus has the ability to change in size and shape and has hundreds of different forms, making it almost impossible to formulate a vaccine against the virus. Exposure to new strains, combined with a general lack of immune resistance, sets the stage for a cold. Poor eating habits, stress, smoking can cause toxins to accumulate and germs and viruses to invade. Constipation causes an accumulation of toxins in the bloodstream and settles in different parts of the body. (Did you ever think of that?) When toxins in the body increase and elimination decreases, nature causes an acute disease. Acute diseases are nature's way of protecting the body. When acute diseases are treated naturally, it will prevent chronic diseases from accumulating.
Cold, flu and fever are acute diseases which is nature’s way to naturally cleanse the body. Germs and viruses are a result of toxins in the body. They will not invade a clean body that has a strong immune and nervous system.
Herbal laxatives or an herbal colon cleanser will speed the cleansing process. Hot herbal teas will increase sweating and reduce fevers and boost elimination of toxins through the skin. Rest will help the body heal faster. A natural treatment is to stop eating and use citrus juices. Oranges, grapefruit, lemons and limes help clean the blood, stimulate liver function and eliminate toxins and mucus from the body. When we eat large amount of food with an acute disease, we stop the cleansing process and the toxins deposit in different parts of the body. Using drugs (over the counter cold remedies) also stops the cleansing process and aspirin causes the stomach to bleed.
Don't lose hope. Here is some natural treatment suggestions that you may already have on hand or can get easily from the health food or an herbal store.
Peppermint Tea - to calm stomach upset
Ginger Tea - ½ teaspoon powdered to 1 cup water stops head and chest congestion, malaise and chills. Drink 1 cup 2-3 times daily.
Sage Tea - will soothe a sore throat. I like to add honey. Really soothing.

Marjoram Tea - useful for asthma, respiratory problems, coughs and to produce a gentle perspiration.
Catnip Tea - for promote perspiration.
Hyssop Tea - Take 1 cup 2-3 times daily. Acts as an expectorant and has anti viral properties.
To make a tea, pack a small tea ball with the desired spice or Herb.
Single herbs that help in acute diseases:
Burdock Root - Blood cleanser
Echinacea (Pupurea) - Take at least 900 mg daily. Speeds recovery, reduces the risk of catching a cold. Fights infection
Cats Claw - Take 2,000-3,000 mg daily - Speeds the rate which the immune system gets rid of the virus.
Astragalus Root - Take 500-1,000 mg 3 times daily. Keeps nasal-passage lining from letting in rhinoviruses.
Garlic capsules - 2 capsules 3 times daily. A natural antibiotic and immune system enhancer.
Fenugreek/Thyme combination - take 2 capsules 3 times daily. Helps rid nasal passages of mucus.
Kelp - 5-10 tablets or capsules daily. A rich source of necessary minerals.
Golden Seal - Natural antibiotic, antiseptic, fights infection, sore throat.
The herb dosage recommended is for adults. Children depending on age would get ½ dose.
Many people use over-the-counter remedies to suppress cold symptoms so they can continue on with their daily activities. Suppressing sneezes and mucus production, however, lengthens the amount of time the body needs to expel the virus.
